My wife recently purchased a pair of Sanuk “Yoga Mat” sandals at Benjamin’s. I have caught her raving about how comfortable they fit and how “happy” her feet feel in the “Yoga Mats” more than once this past week.
The sandals have a base made from the same material that yoga mats are molded from – hence the name. My wife loves wearing sandals – but the Sanuk “Yoga Mats” are her new favorites. They look good and feel great, not to mention, they come in a variety of colors and feature “Power Balance” technology (I have know idea what “Power Balance Technology” is).
My wife knows her sandals…so these must be good.
Beware, as the surfer in your family is very likely to disappear for the rest of Christmas day (depending on marine conditions).

If you surf, you need “The Tool”. It is compact, well built, and packs plenty of useful gadgets into a small pocket knife-like package. COR Surf packaged a wax comb, allen wrench, standard and phillips screwdrivers, and a leash hook into a high-quality plated stainless steel casing. This sucker should not rust or strip.
The leash hook is a great idea, and a real time saver. No longer do I need to hunt down that pen or pencil or that piece of drift wood to help me “hook” my leash… I just look for my tool.
You no longer need to carry multiple tools to change out the different fin systems on your quiver. “The Tool” can change any fin system on the market and the wax comb doubles as a back scratcher (not an intended use…but it works quite well).
With the holidays right around the corner, “The Tool” makes for a great stocking stuffer for that special surfer in your life and is worth every cent of its $25.00 price tag. To purchase, check your local surf shop or Buy The Tool Here .
COR Surf has also released an all purpose wall rack that will safely hold your snowboards and surfboards. I’ll cover this in an upcoming review…lets just say that I removed my previous wall racks and replaced them with a set of COR surf racks.
I was reading the ASR blog and ran across a post about the Felt Hurley PR. Felt Bicycle company is producing a limited editing cruiser capturing "the essence of Hurley surf style and culture." The bicycle is stylized after the ever popular "Puerto Rico" plaid as seen on pro surfer Rob Machado. With rising gas prices, I might have to check into riding one of these suckers to work.
If you spend time around people who love the water and sun, you know at least a person or two that suffer from pterygiums. Pterygiums are strange skin-like growths that cover the inner corner of the eye. If left untreated the growth can eventually cover the pupil and impair vision. The growths are normally caused by ultraviolet light (sunlight).
Pterygiums should be the least of your worries. The sun can cause sunburned corneas, cancer of the eyelid, cataracts, and macular degeneration as well. I try to wear my shades whenever I’m out in the sun to help protect my eyes. However, wearing sunglasses while surfing is next to impossible. That is, if you intend on keeping your sunglasses.
SeaSpecs has invented a system that keeps sunglasses locked securely to your head. I contacted the company to see if they would send me a pair to try out. Would the glasses really stay on during a surfing session?
My first trial occurred out at Bob Hall. The waves were only about knee high but did offer some fun rides. I strapped on my SeaSpecs and paddled out. The first thing I noted was the Specs did seem to "lock" onto my head. Unless you loosened the back strap, they weren’t going to easily slip off. A surfed for about an hour, and the glasses did perform well. They provided protection from the hot sun as they block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. They also are polarized, which seemed to help clarify my vision.
After a few spills, I no longer became worried that they glasses would slip off. SeaSpecs did a good job designing the strap and they gained my trust. The only downside…water spots, they reduced visibility.

I took the glasses out for another session a few weeks later at Packery Channel. This time I asked a friend of mine to try them out. He strapped them on and surfed for about 45 minutes. He thought they stayed on great, provided good UV protection, and reduced the reflectivity of the water (Polarized lenses). He agreed with me about the visibility issues and the water droplets. However, he did say he would like to wear a pair out fishing.

Customer Testimonial (Taken from the SeaSpecs web site)
"I bought a pair of Prescription SeaSpecs almost a year ago and have been meaning to write to you to say how they’ve changed my life! For nearly 30 years of surfing, I was near blind out there, particularly on overcast days when the clouds blended in with the water. It was always challenging to judge the size of the sets and where a wave was going to break. Many times I was caught out of position, paddling at the last second toward the wave. And forget having a conversation with another surfer in the water — if his face was a blur, I could barely make out what he was saying … All that changed with the Sea Specs.
Now I can see the waves clearly, well off in the distance. I don’t have to fiddle around paddling from place to place at the last second — I see the action clearly. I can talk to surfers, even ones at a distance.
BEST OF ALL: No fog. The glasses stay clear, which is some kind of engineering feat.
Thank you very much — Sea Specs have changed my life! ”
If you see me out and want to test drive the SeaSpecs for yourself, just ask. If I have them with me I’ll lend them to you.
