I purchased Kalai’s album, Crows Feet, about three years ago, played it, and somehow forgot about it. I rediscovered this forgotten artist a few days ago and have been enchanted with the haunting background riffs and richness of Kalai’s voice. Although Crows Feet falls into the “folk” genre it could easily slide into the “lay-back-and-chill” genre with the likes of Jack Johnson, Xavier Rudd, and Amos Lee.
Hey, tax season is creeping up on us and we all use a good tax preparation service (www.dependabletaxservice.com ) and some chill-axing tunes. Check it…

In the summer of 2008, iconic surfer and former Pipe Master Rob Machado flew to Indonesia to experience a different kind of surf trip. A journey that would take him way beyond his comfort zone, to the point where he could finally be alone with his thoughts, his desires and the empty perfection of an unnamed Indian Ocean reef. What did he discover? You never stop dreaming. Even when they come true.

I have a real hankering for good ol’ Texas Country music. The kind of ear candy that blends the guitar-twang of country with a deep southern blues beat. Music that makes you yearn for a beat-up pickup truck, a long desolate country road, and a menacing distant thunderstorm. There is nothing that can free you from the manacles of a hectic-domesticated-over-commercialized life like the wide-open spaces of America’s West and the strum of a guitar.
Ryan Bingham’s Mescalito offers up that raw and gritty sound that speaks to the soul. Mescalito reaches deep into the primitive gut and pulls out the inner road-tramp; igniting the flame of rugged individualism. Spin Mescalito, close your eyes, and begin your sojourn from Pecos to El Paso with just a bedroll strapped to your back. The weight of society is shed with each step down that long asphalt snake they call life… and for a brief moment its OK to be a hobo.
Yes…Ryan Bingham is that good.

I’m not a big fan of Taylor Swift, but I believe Kayne owes her a BIG APOLOGY for his drunken tirade at the MTV Video Music Awards (does MTV still have videos?). Kayne rudely interrupted Swift during her acceptance speech for Best Female Video for “You Belong To Me.” West turned to the stunned audience and proclaimed Beyonce as the “real” winner. The audience booed Kayne off the stage.
In an act of class, Beyonce invited Swift back on stage to finish her speech (during an award that Beyonce did win), proving that not all R&B performing artists act like the backside of a mule.
What a bum.
Who: Slaid Cleaves
When: June 20th
Where: Third Coast Theater

If you like good ‘ol Texas music you will love Slaid Cleaves and if you’re a music lover you will love just about any concert at the Third Coast music venue. Third Coast Theater has a small town quaintness about it… but don’t let its simplicity surprise you. The venue is wrapped in some first-rate acoustics which helps the music slither its way into your soul.
Although Cleaves was born in Washington D.C. he now resides in the music capitol of Texas…Austin. He has won the prestigious “New Folk” competition (as has other notible artists such as Nanci Griffth, Robert Earl Keen, and Steve Earle). Cleaves tours throughout the U.S. and Texas.
One of my favorite Slaid albums is his 2004 release “Wishbones.” Cleaves gritty vocals, acoustic guitar, and catchy lyrics make every song on this release worth a listen.
“Doing roadside van repairs, hauling equipment in and out of venues, answering a dozen e-mails a day, planning and booking tours and their financial details, these are not things Maine-raised songwriter Slaid Cleaves envisioned when he said goodbye to a string of day jobs and became a musician full time. But perhaps these mundane tasks ground him, for he is revered for turning out rawneck songs that capture the essential struggle of the Everyman within the resin of a fine melody. “
