I picked up “The Alchemist” because of the large amount of hype surrounding the book’s “life changing” story. The Alchemist also happens to be one of the best selling books in history. Written by Brazilian, Paulo Coelho, the plot follows a goat herder and his quest to fulfill his life-long dream. Santiago, on the advice of a gypsy, gives up his flock and heads for Egypt in search of treasure.
Imagine combining the theme of Rick Warren’s “Purpose Driven Life” with the new age story line of Richard Bach’s “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” and you have something that closely resembles “The Alchemist.”
Perhaps I’m too simple minded to “get it” or I lost something in the story’s Spanish-to-English translation, but I really don’t think “The Alchemist” was that great.
Bottom line…Although an interesting read, I don’t recommend dropping your hard-earned coin on a copy at the local Barnes and Noble. Dig out your library card and “borrow” this one.
A Swedish medical study has found that women who drink a lot of java may suffer from a bit of shrinkage…and you can’t blame the cold on this one. The study has found that almost 50% of women have a gene that may link coffee consumption to breast size. The study also indicates that coffee consumption can decrease the risk of breast cancer.Â
Two hundred seventy women participated in the study. The findings are clear…there is a correlation between smaller breasts and coffee. So ladies…if you’re looking for a reduction in size, you may want to try hanging out at the local coffee shop!
Kelly Slater didn’t intend on winning a ninth world title. He planned on surfing only a handful of events in this year’s tour, but ended up winning “the first couple of events…and kind of got sucked in.” Oh yeah, he may need to grow a few additional fingers if he keeps up the status quo. Number 10?
Brad Sciullo is no small fish when it come to eating big burgers. Brad ate a 20.2 pound burger in less than five hours. The massive burger consisted of 15-punds of meat and 5.2 pounds of toppings. Sciullo polished off the burger at the Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub, located in Clearfield, Pa.
The burger was topped with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, onions, banana peppers and a cup of:
Sciullo received $400.00, a certificate, and three t-shirts for the incredible feat. I’m pretty sure he suffered from a few digestive issues as well.
Half Moon Bay, California is well known for one of the world’s largest waves (Mavericks). It turns out that Half Moon also has some pretty dang good soil. The dirt around the area has helped produce one of the world’s largest gourds!
On October 13, Thad Starr weighed in a, record-breaking, 1,528 pound pumpkin. The gourd was large enough to win the Safeway World Championship Pumkin Weigh-Off and is the second largest pumpkin in the world.
