Hot damn, the old man hasn’t lost his magic. Kelly rang the bell for the third time today, after an intense heat against Australian Bede Durbidge. Kelly trailed behind the Aussie for the first 27 minutes of the heat, only to “sneak up there (Rincon) to see what he could find.” Slater was able to pull off an incredible double-grab aerial which scored him a nice 8.83…and the lead.
Kelly was somewhat stunned that Bede didn’t follow him up to Rincon:
“I was really surprised Bede (Durbidge) let me paddle up to Rincon by myself,†Slater said. “I thought that when I looked back, he would be 10 yards behind me, but when I looked back, he was still in the Bowl. Then that wave came that let me do that big air.â€
