Mavericks Goes Off

On a handful of days each year all the right elements come together to produce a monster-sized wave that can reach rights of more than twenty feet.  It is during these times that an elite group of men and women converge on Half Moon Bay to ride waves that few dare to surf.

On November 21st Mavericks went off and Frank Quirarte was there to catch some amazing photos.  Check them out.

One of the worst Maverick wipeout’s (and arguably the most famous) caught on film was of 16-year-old Jay Moriarity.  The image of Jay free-falling into the shadow of a 25-foot Mavericks wave crusher made the cover of Surfer Magazine.

Sadly, Jay later died (2001) while free diving in the Maldives.  He was only 22.
