A PR company contacted me about Mountain Dew’s latest beverage – Voltage! They asked if I would try it out and write about it. I’m always up for receiving free stuff so I took them up on their offer.
About five days later I received a couple of samples and a t-shirt.
The first thing I noticed was the ice-blue color of the beverage. I was a bit surprised as it wasn’t the traditional yellow color of Mountain Dew. The ice-blue color makes you think “cold” and “thirsty” – obviously Dew’s marketing team had a hand in the color choice.
I have always liked Mountain Dew. The high-octane caffeine and sugar content got me through many nights of late night study sessions. I also like the taste of the original Dew. So – how did Voltage taste?
A bit of history before the review. Voltage was part of the DEWmocracy promotional campaign. DEWmocracy was a pseudo-election giving the public the ability to vote on the next Dew flavor and “restore the spirit of man…and unearth the elixir of freedom.” I could ramble on and give you additional details about the campaign, but this site does it quite well.
So…how does it taste?
I like it.
Mountain Dew Voltage has a nice bubbly feel to it. I found myself swirling the Dew around my palette. Swishing a sip of “Voltage” around the inside of my pie-hole (mouth) immersed my tongue in a cornucopia of flavor. My kids both gulped down a bottle and liked it- most kids will.
The bottle says that it is “charged” with Raspberry, Citrus flavor, and Ginseng. Ginseng is suppose to reduce stress and stimulate mental and physical activity – I’m pretty sure there is not enough “Ginseng extract” in a 20oz bottle of Voltage to do much good, but you never know. However, the ginseng does add to the exotic taste of Voltage.
The calorie count did take me a bit by surprise. A 20 oz bottle contains 2.5 servings (8oz per serving). There are 110 calories per serving. That means that a 20oz bottle of Voltage contains a whopping 275 calories! But remember, this stuff is marketed at the 13-30 extreme sports and gaming demographic – who have little problem burning calories while skating, skiing, or surfing.
